Show Notes

Welcome to, Transmits!

Hi, I’m Ryan Hefner (@ryanhefner), and I am in the process of building, Transmits, an audio journaling and distribution app focused on letting you quickly capture and refine your ideas, and easily share them with the world—or not.

In this podcast, I’ll be documenting the building of Transmits, and what it takes to build a modern SaaS application in 2024. I’ll be diving into the technical challenges and tradeoffs made while building the app, exploring the marketing and messaging approaches as I try to position the product properly to support current and future features while trying to find the right early customers and opportunities to set the product up for success, and dig into all the other things that go into taking an idea and turning it into reality—and a company—that can generate either enough money, or notoriety, to help build the foundation to a sustainable life that provides the freedom to work on what I want, when I want.

In addition to documenting life in Transmits, I’ll also be reaching out to friends in the industry—and beyond—to hear about what things they are working on, and share stories and tips that you might find helpful depending on where you are at on your path.

I hope you’ll join me on this journey, and I look forward to sharing the stories—both good and bad—along the way.

In the meantime, sign up for the mailing list to get notified when early access opens up–along with other updates and goodies–on the site, https://www.transmits.io, and follow along on Twitter, @transmitsio, where I plan on hosting some broadcasts of discussions/interviews and live working sessions.

And, if you like this podcast, you might like the other podcast, All Play, where some of these episodes may be cross-posted from, along with other general thoughts and updates on things I am working on beyond Transmits. And follow along on twitter, @allplayfm.

Hey. How's it going? I'm Ryan Hefner. Welcome to Transmits. This is the podcast that I'm gonna be documenting the building and evolution of Transmits, an audio journaling app and hosting platform where you can privately capture your, you know, thoughts via an audio journal, get local transcriptions done right within the app, and then you have the option of uploading and sharing those with other people or potentially even publishing, sharing those to, like, a podcast.

00:33 - 01:01

So this is the podcast where I'm gonna be documenting exactly what's going into building transmits and what's going on. Actually, I have another podcast that I started called All Play where it's a little bit more of a, it's both documenting transmit, so there's gonna be some crossover episodes between that show and this one. And, but I also can just some other stuff that's not necessarily transmits related. So if you're curious, go check that out. It's, all play dot f m.

01:02 - 01:39

And you can see that one and hear about random daily life stuff. This one's going to be totally focused on building of Transmits. So transmits is a local first, privacy first, kind of mobile web progressive web app first app that I'm building. It's kind of both a challenge for myself just to kinda explore the whole idea of building an app that can fully work offline. Obviously, the the uploading and seeking stuff, when you start getting to that, will have to require an Internet connection.

01:39 - 02:04

But recording, transcriptions, being able to search and just, like, explore past recordings in the app will all work offline. And, yeah, that's kind of at least the intention for where the app's going right now. As far as what's gonna be covered on this podcast, I mean, it's gonna be a little bit of everything. It's gonna be technical. It's gonna be marketing.

02:04 - 02:57

It's probably gonna be a little bit of user research. Hopefully, I'll bring in some people who are just interested in the topic of, either, like, personal journaling or podcasting or whatever and getting them on and talking about what they're doing. And, yeah, should be kinda breezy. So if you like what you're hearing, follow along, subscribe. You can find transmits at transmits.io You can follow on Twitter at @transmitsio. And, yeah, go to the website, sign up to be on the mailing list, get updates on when episodes like this come out, and also when there's just general updates about the app and where things are at. So hope you're interested.

02:59 - 03:04

Hope you'll follow along, and I hope to be talking with you soon. Have a great one. Later.
